UPDATE: Two accidents cause traffic problems on M1

Two accidents have caused severe traffic problems on the M1 this morning, on both the northbound and southbound carriageways.

One lane and the hard shoulder is currently closed on the northbound carriageway between J29, A617 (Chesterfield) and J29a, Markham (Markham Vale), because of an accident involving two lorries.

This incident is currently causing delays of around 30 minutes and is expected to continue to cause problems until midday as the authorities clear up a fuel spill.

And one lane was closed on the southbound carriageway between J29, A617 (Chesterfield) and J28, A38 (Alfreton), because of an accident.

However, this has now been cleared and traffic is moving normally.
