TWO men badly hurt in Welbeck Colliery blast

TWO men have been badly hurt in a New Year's Eve blast at a former mine site.

AN EXPLOSION at the former Welbeck Colliery site on New Year's Eve left two men in hospital.

Emergency services were called at 7pm to an electrical substation on the site, on Elkesley Road near Meden Vale.

Two workers, aged 38 and 26, were taken to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham with severe facial burns.

A Notts Police spokesman said their injuries could be life threatening.

A police statement said the site would be cordoned off while investigations are ongoing.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.

Welbeck Colliery ceased production in May 2010 but team has remained on site to decommission the mine.
