A 'brave and much-loved' Worksop dad has lost his two-year fight with cancer '“ shortly after the community rallied around to help give him the wedding of his dreams.

David Landau, who was suffering from terminal bowel cancer, died, aged 30, at Ashgate Hospice, Chesterfield, with his new wife Nicole by his side.

The couple, who have a one-year-old daughter, Lucy, tied the knot at The Sitwell Arms in Renishaw in August thanks to £1,000 in donations from Worksop well-wishers and charity Gift of a Wedding.

More than 7,000 businesses, from wedding dress retailers to venues across the country, offered their services to David and Nicole free of charge – the highest number of responses Gift of a Wedding has ever received.

The wedding was hailed by David’s family as “a miracle” as the couple were unable to work due to his illness and were worried they would not save enough money in time.

Susan Stokes, David’s sister, said: “David went into Ashgate around the beginning of September, as he was in a great deal of pain and they were trying to get this under control.

“It was meant to be a temporary thing, but David deteriorated rapidly and sadly lost his fight.”

She said the family was determined to stay positive by holding future fundraising events in her brother’s memory.

She said: “We have a Facebook page called David’s Battle and have a little team of helpers for lots of fundraising events we have planned.

“All the money raised will be going to MacMillan Cancer Support as they funded David, Nicole and Lucy’s first holiday as a family together, and also the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, as this was David’s dream job.”
