The figure makes further grim reading with the Foreign Office advising against all non-essential travel to the country.

Travel to Spain was initially permitted by the UK government, but as coronavirus cases continued to rise in the country the Foreign and Commonwealth Office changed its advice.

The travel advice also covers the Canary and Balearic islands, despite Spanish pleas for an exemption.

Holiday companies and airlines have cancelled many holidays and flights to the country and people returning from Spain now have to self-isolate for two weeks.

Yesterday Spain recorded 5,760 new cases of the virus, with 297,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus overall.

The country has had over 28,000 deaths.

Currently, the region with the most cases is Catalonia with over 76,000.

The FCO advice from July said: “This advice is based on evidence of increases in cases of COVID-19 in several regions, but particularly in Aragon, Navarra and Catalonia (which include the cities of Zaragoza, Pamplona and Barcelona).

“If you are staying in any of the affected areas, follow the advice of the local authorities.”

The region of Andalusia has also announced that it will be introducing new fines to anyone caught flouting the rules.

The fines are up to an amount of around £540,000.

Jet2 has cancelled holidays to mainland Spain until Sunday August 16, and holidays to the Balearic and Canary Islands until August 9.

TUI has cancelled all holidays to mainland Spain and Portugal up to and including Sunday, August 16.

TUI has cancelled all holidays to the Balearic and Canary Islands until Sunday, August 9, but anyone booked between August 10 and 16 can also claim a refund or rebook for another holiday.

Meanwhile, a seaside town in Spain hugely popular with expat Brits is on alert after 32 people tested positive for coronavirus.

Now three nightclubs have closed in the seaside town of Mojacar, in the southern Spanish province of Almeria, where 80 per cent of the foreign population is British.
