Nathan Soanes, 21, of Cumberland Drive, Mansfield, pleaded guilty to assaulting the retiree by beating him when he appeared before Mansfield Magistrates yesterday (October 28).

The court heard how Soanes was walking along Westfield Lane with a group of male friends in the early hours of June 28, when he came across the retired man.

The probation service told the court that the older man had approached the group and had wanted to shake hands with them, but Soanes instead thought he was going to hit him, so decided to attack him first.

Lee Shepherd, prosecuting, described how the victim had been left with bruises and cuts to his face, as images of the victim were shown in the courtroom.

Mr Shepherd then read a statement from the victim, which said: “I feel violated about what this man has done to me and I don’t want to anybody to know what happened to me.”

Amy Godson, defending, said Soanes fully accepts the charges.

Miss Godson added: “It was out of character and he was in drink at the time of the incident.”

Soanes was given a community order to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and made to pay £250 compensation to the victim.

He was also ordered to pay £296 in additional court costs.
