Tesco won’t be ready this year

Legal wranglings are holding up construction work on the new Tesco superstore planned for Carlton Road in Worksop.

Rumours had been circulating around the town that the project had been cancelled.

But the supermarket giant denied those claims this week and confirmed that the store will still go ahead.

It will not be built by the end of the year, though, as it had initially hoped.

A spokesman told the Worksop Guardian that the project was ‘still progressing’ but that ‘legal matters and details that needed addressing through the planning process’ were still being ironed out.

She said: “As with any development of this scale and nature it can be a very lengthy process from start to finish.”

“We have completed our initial ground works and we are currently resolving outstanding legal matters to enable the next stage of works.”

It is thought that public rights of way and footpaths that border the site are still causing headaches for the development, although Tesco would not confirm what the specific hold-up was.

In October last year Tesco said they hoped work would start in site ‘within weeks’ but the derelict land remains deserted. And a spokesman has now said the store would not be ready by the end of 2013.

When plans were first announced it was hoped the new store would be up and running by Christmas 2012.

Once built it will replace the existing Tesco supermarket on Gateford Road.
