Glen Morley, 48, of Shireoaks Court, Mansfield, admitted stealing sweets from B&M Bargains on July 11 and Poundland, in St Peter’s Retail Park, on May 12.

His partner, Ella Pickaver, 36, of the same address, admitted thefts of confectionary from Poundland on June 7 and July 9 and B&M Bargains on July 11.

But they both denied taking the chocolate from Superdrug on July 25.

The court heard Pickaver tested positive for Class A drugs when she was arrested and that Morley, who had ‘an extensive record’, had last been convicted in October 2012.

Sarah Neale, mitigating, said the couple were not prolific offenders.

She said: “They are savvy to what happens if they commit further offences.”

She said the thefts were motivated because ‘they weren’t able to make ends meet’ and they had ‘significant debts’ because of utility bills.

Magistrates in Mansfield granted them bail until a trial on October 17, on condition they do not enter any retail premises in Mansfield town centre or St Peter’s Retail Park.

They will be allowed to collect methadone prescriptions from a chemist on Wood Lane.
