Kendal Stokes, a ‘one of a kind’ occupational therapy support worker, works at Swallownest Court adult mental health inpatient unit.

She was nominated for her impeccable standard of care for patients and colleagues alike and received her Health Education England accolade for ‘outstanding achievement’ at the Advancing Healthcare Awards.

The London award ceremony celebrates the work of the UK’s allied health professionals and scientists.

Judges thought Kendal was an ‘exceptional’ person who was always prepared to go the extra mile and Kendal’s colleagues said she had introduced new groups and new ways of working at the unit.

These included dog visits, breakfast clubs on the rehab ward, a hospital-wide art project.

She has also launched a patient-led tuck shop trolley service as well as new health and wellbeing initiatives, include walking and gardening groups.

Commenting on her award, Kendal said: “I’m over the moon. It was flattering to be nominated, but to win is a real honour.”

“I work with some fantastic people, so this award is dedicated to all of them too.”

Chief executive, Christine Bain, said: “This is fantastic news.”

“On behalf of the Trust, I’d like to congratulate Kendal and say how proud we are of her.”

“I am delighted that her personal efforts have been recognised in this way.”

Elizabeth Sidaway, lead occupational therapist at the unit, said: “Kendal is one of a kind.”

“She does her job the best she can without asking for praise or acknowledgement.”

“Her ideas have brought our team together in events and activities which patients,, staff, carers and visitors have all been involved in.”
