A Sutton car enthusiast smashed into a bollard while drunk in his mother's car.

Ryan Binks, 25, of St Michael’s Street, admitted driving while over the limit when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

A breath test in the early hours of July 16 revealed he had 83 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Ruth Snodin, prosecuting, said: “He only intended have one drink but he ended up having five or six.

“He drove home at around 2.30am and veered into a bollard. He flagged down a car and asked the driver to call police.”

Dan Foster, mitigating, said: “He is extremely embarassed to find himself here today.

“He is a self-employed electrician. This will cost him a valuable contract.

“Ironically and sadly for him, he enjoys maintaining and working on old cars.”

He said Binks had spent the last three years restoring an old car which he will have to sell to cover his court costs.

Magistrates banned him from 20 months and fined him £350, with costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £35.
