Sturton-le-Steeple: Campaigners have welcomed the news that plans for a seven turbine wind farm have been scrapped

EDF Energy Renewables has confirmed that it will not be proceeding with its bid to seek planning approval for the Maumhill wind farm, at Sturton-le-Steeple.

After ‘reviewing the scheme in the light of recent government announcements on onshore wind’, the company has informed Bassetlaw District Council that it does not intend to develop its plans for the project any further.

Bassetlaw MP John Mann said: “This is a victory for people power and common sense. The campaign against the wind farm, led by local residents, clearly demonstrated why the site was unsuitable for turbines.

“I was happy to work closely with local residents, organising public meetings and advising on how best to object to the proposals. I also met with representatives from EDF at the highest level to raise local people’s concerns and in this case the right decision has been made.”

EDF Energy Renewables’ original application for a nine turbine wind farm on the Maumhill site was refused by a planning committee in February 2013. Proposals for a revised seven turbine development were publicised last year at a series of local public exhibitions, but those plans will now not be taken any further.

Dave Langmead, clerk for North and South Wheatley, Sturton-le-Steeple and North and South Leverton Parish Council, said: “We have been fighting this one for nearly three years and it has been a real community effort.

“The main reason for our objection was that our back yard is already full, everywhere you look is going to be industrial. This was the last bit of open land.”
