Sporting success stories

Hundreds of runners from Bassetlaw turned their miles into smiles by raising money for Sport Relief.

Enthusiasts wanting to help vulnerable people from the UK and abroad strapped on their trainers and took part in the Sport Relief Mile.

But for one Worksop resident, trainers were not an option.

Mike Elshaw decided to take advantage of being selected to run a mile in The One Show’s mammoth 1,000 mile, ten-day relay around the UK by 1,000 runners.

“One of the questions asked on the application was whether you’d be running in fancy dress, I wasn’t but I did say I’d run in Vibram Five Fingers if I was selected,” he said.

The five toed footwear looks like a glove on your feet.

Mike has also entered for this year’s London Marathon for the first time to raise money for Motor Neuron Disease Association.

“My mother was diagnosed with MND when I was 11 years old and over the next seven years I watched as she slowly and cruelly lost the ability to walk, talk, eat and eventually breathe,” he said.“She was only in her mid 40s when she died.”
