South Yorks: MP one step closer to launching ‘helpine’ for victims

South Yorkshire MP Sarah Champion is celebrating after persuading the victims minister to work closely with her over her plans for a new ‘victims’ helpline’.

Ms Champion, Labour MP for Rotherham and chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for victims and witnesses of crime, pressed the government about the helpline during Parliament’s justice questions.

She asked: “How will the Secretary of State ensure the new national helpline for victims is properly joined up with information and support services provided by police and crime commissioners?”

Mike Penning, policing, crime and victims minister, said: “A lot of work is being done in this area. It will be joined up and we will make an announcement shortly.

“I think the police and crime commissioners get this now.

“It is important chief constables and commissioners get it and that is something we are working on closely.

“I am happy to work closely with Ms Champion if she would like to do so.”

Speaking after the debate, Ms Champion said: “It is vital this new helpline for victims isn’t just for show.

“It must provide victims with the real help and support they need.”
