Soroptimists hand cheques to three charities

The Soroptimist International Club of the Dukeries was delighted to be able to present cheques for £225 to each of its three chosen local charities during its monthly dinner meeting at Ye Olde Bell in Barnby Moor last month.

Club members were extremely pleased to welcome Bassetlaw Hospice charity administrator Ian Hall along with Wendy King from the Bluebell Wood Hospice.

A further donation on behalf of the Worksop Children’s Contact Centre was accepted by Soroptimist members, who also volunteer at the centre.

Afterwards guest speakers Peter and Ingrid Cornish from the Bat Preservation Society gave an enlightening talk about the facts and myths surrounding the creatures - bringing along two live bats for the audience to meet.

A number of events have helped the club to raise a substantial amount for charity, including a Beauty Evening held at the Post Graduate Centre of Bassetlaw Hospital in October.

Some 45 guests were treated to an interesting and informative talk by the Clarins team based at Debenhams, Meadowhall, and also had the chance to have a facial or massage.

Other businesses, such as Deuce on Central Avenue in Worksop, also attended this event, selling a wide range of products, including handbags, scented candles and bath bombs.

Refreshments, provided by the Club, were available, while raffles were drawn by both the Soroptimists and Clarins, offering guests the chance to win some fantastic prizes.

And at the October dinner meeting guest speaker and local beekeeper Sandra Hart gave an entertaining talk about the world of bees and the beneficial properties of the honey they produce.

A range of honey, creams and other produce, derived from these remarkable insects, were on sale.
