Snuff out the risk during Candle Fire Safety Week

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue is urging people to snuff out the risk of fire in their homes for Candle Fire Safety Week.

From 14th - 20th November the service will highlight the most important steps you can take to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

They include keeping candles away from flammable materials like curtains and putting them out when you leave the room, even for a moment.

The advice comes at the start of the year’s busiest period for candle-related blazes.

More than 50 fires are started by candles every day in England, and in winter they hit their peak.

Between October and February every year, the number rises sharply and is at its highest in December, when it’s more than double the summer average.

Debbie Robinson, deputy community fire safety manager, said: “Place your lit candles with extra care, always in heat-resistant holders away from curtains, pets and children, and always remember to put them out when you leave the room, even if it is just for a moment.”

She said even with these precautions, it is vital you are prepared that the worst could happen.

“A working smoke alarm can give you the vital time you need to get out, stay out and call 999.”

“Test your alarm regularly and practise your escape routes.”

“Every year we have to deal with fires caused by candles being placed in unsuitable holders. In May this year, a family in Lincoln had a lucky escape when an unattended candle caused severe damage to their home. They were alerted by a smoke alarm that was fitted by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue just six weeks earlier.”
