Forecasters at the Met Office warned of ‘significant snow accumulations’ over higher ground, as well as in non-mountainous northern areas.

By Tuesday, wintry showers are expected to bring a combination of rain, sleet and snow.

Temperatures are predicted to rise barely above freezing during day time hours.

Overnight temperatures will feel as cold as minus five degrees Celsius in parts of the north, forecasters said.
