Their leaky defence has been exploited by Brighton and Hove Albion, Preston North End and Reading and they are winless in their last three trips to S6 in league competition, failing to score on each occasion.

Prolific striker Scott Hogan also left Griffin Park at the end of the January transfer window, completing a £12m move to Aston Villa.

Carvalhal said: “They have good players even though they lost a good striker.

“They are not missing Hogan too much as they have scored 10 goals in four games.”

Morgan Fox is running again after recovering from an ankle problem, but Carvalhal may keep faith with Daniel Pudil at left-back.

Vincent Sasso is expected to continue his partnership with Glenn Loovens at the heart of their rearguard as Tom Lees has failed to shake off a knee injury.

“I must look to the players that are available,” he said. “I must try to find solutions and not try to create problems. That is my job.

“We know the competition.

“We must be consistent and solid.”

Meanwhile, Gary Hooper registered in the development squad’s 2-1 defeat against Crewe Alexandra yesterday.

The striker, who has not featured since November 19, played over an hour as the Under-23s suffered their first defeat in six matches. Defender Urby Emanuelson and wide man Will Buckley also started.
