Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal is confident the Championship promotion hopefuls can shine without star striker Fernando Forestieri.

Former Italian U21 international Forestieri is set to miss the next two fixtures after his controversial dismissal in Friday’s goalless draw at Hull City.

It was the 26-year-old forward’s second red in as many matches, ruling him out of Saturday’s South Yorkshire derby with Rotherham United and next Tuesday’s trip to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Carvalhal told The Star: “Of course, we prefer to play with all the players and Fernando’s a special player to us.

“We have won without the likes of Barry Bannan, Gary Hooper and Keiren Westwood this season so we can win without Fernando.”

Forestieri was reduced to tears in the dressing room after his red card against Hull.

His second caution was for diving following a collision with Michael Dawson in the closing stages of the derby. Carvalhal branded the call a “big mistake” and a “very bad decision”.

“I’m very upset, but we are happy to have taken a point and the team is more motivated than ever for the next game,” said Forestieri.

Wednesday published their annual accounts yesterday revealing the club is debt free.
