Sheffield Wednesday: Owls ready to bide their time in loan market

The Star understands the Owls, who entertain mid-table Brentford on Saturday, remain keen on bolstering their central midfield department. Carlos Carvalhal’s side are thought to be big admirers of Everton’s Darron Gibson and have also been heavily linked with a move for Watford’s Adlène Guedioura.

But despite the window re-opening earlier this week, Wednesday are in no rush to add to their squad.

Teams have until Thursday, March 24, to bring in recruits on a temporary basis and, should Carvalhal’s men finish in the Championship’s top-six, that could extend their season by a further three weeks.

Clubs can sign players on an emergency loan for a maximum of 93 days and the Owls will want to make sure that whoever they sign will be clear to play until the date of the Play-Off Final at Wembley on Saturday, May 28.

Wednesday already have six loan players on their books in Vincent Sasso, Michael Turner, Joe Bennett, Alex Lopez, Daniel Pudil and Aiden McGeady and Football League rules stipulate only five loan signings can be included in any 18-man match-day squad.

Coach Lee Bullen told The Star: “We know that we have a good side. We know that there are teams who have probably spent more than us. We have spent a couple of quid but there are teams with bigger budgets than us and we have got a group of players who are buying into the work ethic that a team has. We are not a team of individuals.

“People look at us and think ‘what a good group of individuals’ but that’s a load of rubbish. It’s a team and they are playing as a team.”
