Sheffield Wednesday: Owls plan for the future

Regardless of whether they are successful in their top-six assault, Sheffield Wednesday are intent on laying solid foundations for the future.

The Owls, occupying the final play-off spot after winning five out of their last six Championship fixtures, tied down five of their senior players to long-term deals last week.

Jack Hunt, Barry Bannan, Atdhe Nuhiu, Glenn Loovens and Sam Hutchinson all penned new deals, keeping them at the Hillsborough club until at least the summer of 2018.

Head coach Carlos Carvalhal told The Star: “They are players who have good personalities and are team workers. They can help the team and these are the sort of players we need all the time.

“All the players want to stay here for the long-term and that is good. They are enjoying playing in the team.”

Forestieri reaps the benefits of team work

The Portuguese chief, who hopes first-choice goalkeeper Keiren Westwood (groin) will be passed fit for Saturday’s tussle at Reading, added: “I believe in emotional environments.

“There are players who are earning a lot of money at other clubs but they are a little frustrated because they don’t enjoy what they are doing.

“You need a connection in football to play your best and these players belong to the future of Sheffield Wednesday so I am very happy about that.

“We try to help create a good environment where players can be happy and enjoy their work.”
