The defender has stood out since recovering from a hamstring problem, helping Wednesday chalk up three clean sheets last month.

Lees, who has featured 34 times this season, is vying with Leeds United striker Marco Antenucci, Rotherham United midfielder Lee Frecklington and Burnley forward Sam Vokes for the prize.

The 25-year-old has played a major role in the Owls keeping a club-record four successive shut outs away from Hillsborough.

The judging panel, consisting of Sky Sports’ Football League expert Don Goodman; Football League Head of Communications John Nagle; League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery outlined their reasons for nominating ex-Leeds centre-back Lees.

The panel said: “Tom Lees is the heartbeat of a Wednesday defence which conceded just a single goal in four March games.

“Positionally aware, a timer of tackles and a fine reader of play, Tom also proved his value at corners with a headed opener against Charlton Athletic.”

The winner of the award will be revealed tomorrow.
