Sheffield Wednesday have cooled their interest in Bournemouth striker Glenn Murray.

Reports in a national newspaper earlier this week suggested the Owls wanted to capture the 32-year-old on loan until the end of the season to strengthen their play-off prospects.

But The Star understands Murray, a proven goal-scorer at Championship level, is not keen on a move north, forcing Wednesday to look elsewhere for other possible alternatives.

Murray, a £4million buy from Crystal Palace last September, has struggled to hold down a regular first-team spot with the Cherries. Fifthteen of Murray’s 22 appearances have come as a substitute and his last start came in Bournemouth’s FA Cup victory against Portsmouth at the end of January.

Murray, who penned a three-year contract with the Dorest club, has registered three times in six starts and 13 substitute appearances in the Premier League.

However, Benik Afobe’s New Year arrival pushed the 32-year-old even further down the pecking order.

Murray and former Owls left-back Rhoys Wiggins played all of Bournemouth’s development match with Southend on Tuesday.

It has emerged Murray has been a long-time target for Wednesday. When Stuart Gray was in charge, they tried to sign the Barrow-born player in August 2014 on a temporary basis but the big forward opted to move instead to Reading.

Murray plundered eight goals in 18 starts for the Royals before returning to Palace, although he missed a penalty in their narrow defeat at Hillsborough.

It is also understood that the Owls inquired about Murray’s services earlier this campaign.

Time is running out for the Owls to add to their squad. The emergency loan market for Football League clubs closes a week today.

Wednesday boast an array of attacking talent, including Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper, Atdhe Nuhiu and Lucas Joao.
