Sheffield Wednesday: New arrival Jake is Kean for Owls to challenge

The 25-year-old, who’s great uncle Fred Kean also represented Wednesday between 1920-1928, joined Carlos Carvalhal’s side after his contract with Norwich City was terminated by mutual consent yesterday.

Although the length of Kean’s contract has not been disclosed, it is understood he has signed a two-year contract.

Kean, who started his career at Derby County, said: “I believe this club has got every chance to go up automatically, if not via the play-offs.

“There is a strong squad here and obviously on the back of the disappointment last year, the lads will want to kick on. It will be a difficult division; it always is. There are some big teams, who will have a good go but I expect it to be tough like always.”

Despite only moving to Carrow Road last summer, Kean never played for the Canaries. He made a total of eight appearances in loan spells with Colchester United and Swindon Town last season.

Kean saw the Owls’ impressive 2-0 pre-season friendly win at Chesterfield last Saturday and is looking forward to battling it out with Keiren Westwood, Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson for a starting spot.

He admitted: “There is a lot of competition.

“It’s up to me to come here and have a go and try and get that number one shirt.

“But it’s Keiren’s at the minute and if I can provide more competition for him and make him play better then great.”

After leaving Derby, Kean spent six years at Blackburn Rovers. He also enjoyed loan spells with Rochdale, Yeovil Town and Oldham Athletic.

Kean replaces Lewis Price, who opted to join Rotherham United last week.
