Sheffield Wednesday: I'd love 10 more years at Hillsborough, says Carlos Carvalhal

The Portuguese boss has done a sterling job since succeeding Stuart Gray eleven months ago, leading Wednesday to the brink of promotion.

Carvalhal’s men take on Hull City in an all-Yorkshire final at Wembley this weekend knowing they are 90 minutes away from a Premier League return.

Wednesday’s hierarchy rewarded Carvalhal with a contract extension last month, although the length of the deal was not disclosed.

But Carvalhal has revealed: “I signed for another three years here. I didn’t want to sign for that long - I wanted one year - but the chairman wanted three.

“I want to stay at clubs when people are happy with me - the fans, the chairman, the players - and when I’m happy also. So I don’t have any problems to move if the people aren’t happy.”

Carvalhal said he agreed to prolong his Owls stay “two or three months ago”.

“We are near the final and I understand it is a good moment to talk about this,” said Carvalhal, who has a fully-fit squad at his disposal. “We are doing very well about the quality of the football. The club must grow up - we have a lot of things to do.”

When pressed on why he initially only wanted to sign a short-team deal, Carvalhal said: “I don’t need four years contract.

“I don’t need money - I’m good with my life. If this happens [staying] I’m happy. Being happy is the people around you enjoying what you are doing.

“If they are, I can stay here 10 years. If they aren’t, it will be different for me.”
