Sheffield Wednesday: Experienced David Jones vows to stay grounded

Wednesday, occupying the final play-off position after 37 matches, will climb up to fifth if they beat Reading at Hillsborough tonight.

Jones, one top-flight promotion away from equalling the record of five set by former England striker Kevin Phillips, is expected to line up in the Owls’ midfield against a Royals side who have lost their last three away matches without scoring.

Jones told The Star: “All of the promotions have been great and had their own different challenges.

“This has been a different challenge for me. I joined a new club and I feel like it has been a different role for me this year.

“The aim is to get another promotion this season but we are not getting too ahead of ourselves. There’s a long way to go yet in terms of dreaming of that.

“First of all we have to take care of business on Friday and look to kick on from there.”

Head coach Carlos Carvalhal, who was fined £2,000 by the Football Association yesterday after admitting an improper conduct charge for his sending off against Aston Villa, could be without a number of players due to injury, including Sam Hutchinson and Fernando Forestieri.

Jones said: “We have nine games to get more points than the teams around us and we are confident of doing that.

“We know if we can consistently put it together we are a threat and a very difficult team.

“We can beat anyone and we have proven that.”
