Wednesday, sitting sixth in the Championship, underlined their Premier League ambitions by capturing Gary Hooper for a fee believed to be in the region of £3m from Norwich City last Friday.

Hooper instantly repaid their faith by scoring his seventh goal in as many matches in Saturday’s hard-fought draw at Reading.

“The chairman is doing fantastic in bringing the players we want,” Carvalhal told The Star. “The players are happy here which is something very positive and the chairman is doing very well.”

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Wednesday will make further additions before the window shuts next Monday at 11pm.

The Owls are understood to be interested in Everton duo Darron Gibson and Aiden McGeady. Midfielder Gibson and winger McGeady have been told they can leave Goodison Park on loan, with Aston Villa and Sunderland thought to be tracking Gibson while Leeds United are believed to be big admirers of McGeady.

Meanwhile, George Hirst, the son of Owls legend David, has been included in the England Under-17 squad. The 16-year-old striker will be hoping to take part in the Algarve tournament next month.
