Conceição has replaced coach Joao Cunha, who left due to “personal reasons” earlier this month.

Conceição’s duties include analysis and fitness work.

Joao Mario Oliveira

Carvalhal knows Conceição well, having worked with him at Al Ahli in the United Arab Emirates. Before becoming Wednesday’s first ever foreign head coach last summer, Carvalhal spent two seasons acting as technical director at Dubai-based club Al Ahli.

“Jhony has been working with us for a couple of weeks after Joao left for personal reasons,” Carvalhal told The Star. “Jhony worked with me in Dubai and is a member of the staff who understands exactly what we want.

“We substituted him in after Joao left and I’m sure he will do well here.”

Joao Mario Oliveira

When Carvalhal was appointed last summer, the Portuguese chief was joined by countrymen Joao Mario Oliveira, Cunha and Bruno Lage.

Oliveira worked as Carvalhal’s assistant coach at Vitoria Setubal, Astreras Tripoli, Sporting CP, Besiktas, and Istanbul BB before coaching the Under-19s team at Al Ahly.

Lage, boasting a degree in Physical Education, health Sciences and Sports, Football specialty, started his coaching career at Vitoria Setubal.

He has also previously worked in Benfica’s youth set-up, helping them win the Portugal U15 and U17 National Championship in 2008/09 and 2010/11 respectively. Lage was named Benfica’s coach of the year twice.
