Sheffield Wednesday: Callum McManaman '˜deserves more' game time, concedes Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal

The talented wide man, on loan from West Bromwich Albion until the end of the season, made a big impact as a second half substitute in Wednesday’s midweek defeat to Brentford.

Seven of McManaman’s eight Wednesday appearances have come from off the bench, with his solitary start coming against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Carvalhal has conceded the 25-year-old has been unfortunate with his lack of action but is confident the former Wigan Athletic trainee still has a big part to play in their promotion push.

He told The Star: “Callum deserves probably more than what we are giving to him.

“He is working hard but he’s not had chances as we have been winning the games. He had a chance to play against Brentford. It was not a surprise to me how he played. He’s working very well and we are very happy with him.”

Before their Bees slip up, Carvalhal’s men had won four Championship fixtures in a row. Had they picked up maximum points on Tuesday, the Owls would have moved up to fourth.

Next up for Wednesday is a trip to top-six rivals Leeds United.

“Callum has been doing well but it is not easy to go inside the team when we are winning,” added Carvalhal, who has largely kept faith with Ross Wallace and Adam Reach in the wide areas.
