Sheffield Wednesday: Business as usual for Carvalhal as Owls focus on Wembley

There were no wild celebrations from the Portugese head coach following Monday night’s 1-1 draw at Brighton and Hove Albion, which saw them seal a 3-1 aggregate win. He didn’t even treat himself to a glass of red wine!

After the long trek back to South Yorkshire and a few hours kip, Carvalhal headed back to work yesterday morning to begin preparations for their trip to Wembley on Saturday, May 28.

The 50-year-old made a personal check on their next opponents last night, hoping to identify any weaknesses which they can potentially exploit in the showpiece Final.

It will be the first time Carvalhal has visited the home of football and he is looking forward to fulfilling a childhood dream.

“I grew up in my country seeing the games on a black and white TV and it used to be the final of the cup in England,” he said. “I never thought I would go to Wembley one day and now this is something that we have achieved. It is fantastic.”

You have to go back to 1993 for the last time Wednesday reached Wembley.

Carvalhal added: “I played football for a long time and the things that I remember is not the money, but the good moments when we played important games and when we reached cup finals. We are making history.”

Carvalhal paid tribute to Brighton after their spirited second leg performance.

“I said to the coach of Brighton that you don’t deserve all of this because they had a fantastic season,” he said. “They fought until the last minute to get promotion. They deserve promotion.

“But that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve it. We have grown up together like a team.

“It is something that we achieved together, as players and fans, and I am very happy and proud.

“It’s been a long time for Sheffield Wednesday and it’s very important for the club. Now we can wake up the giant.”
