Sheffield Wednesday: Adam Reach keen to break Owls scoring duck

Wednesday’s record-signing has been utilised in three different positions since arriving at the end of August and Carlos Carvalhal’s side have triumphed in six out of the 10 matches Reach has been involved in.

And after a steady start to his Owls career, the 23-year-old is now eager to open his goal-scoring account.

“I can’t wait to get off the mark,” Reach, a £5m buy from Middlesbrough, told The Star. “If something went in off my backside right now, I wouldn’t really care; I would still run off and celebrate!

“Hopefully that goal will come sooner rather than later. I feel like I have been getting closer and closer every game.

“Finishing is a part of my game which I’m really trying to improve. Hopefully that practice comes off at some point and I will start scoring some goals.

“It is one of those things where you score one and you might find yourself scoring two or three.”

Reach came close to breaking his duck in front of goal in Saturday’s loss at Derby County. His shot was heading in and blatantly handballed near the line by Rams skipper Richard Keogh but referee James Linington was unmoved and turned down Wednesday’s penalty appeal.

Reach conceded: “It happened so quickly at the time that I didn’t really see much.

“I’ve seen it back and Keogh has obviously handballed it on the line but it wasn’t given and we have to move on.

“We can’t change the decision so we have to forget about the Derby game and move on to Ipswich.”

The controversial incident reignited the debate over technology being introduced across all levels in football.

Reach said: “I’m all for technology as long as it doesn’t affect the game too much. If they can have a way to quickly analyse things like that, then brilliant but I can’t see it coming into the game anytime soon.

“We have to put our faith and trust in the officials. They missed one on Saturday but that’s football. The ref is a human being at the end of the day and can make mistakes.”

The ex-Middlesbrough player, who has been deployed at left-back, left wing and up front by Carvalhal, believes there were still plenty of positives to take from the Derby defeat.

“It was one of the best performances we have had away from home since I came to the club,” he said. “We played really well with the ball and dominated for the full game.

“We have to make our domination count and score first. Maybe I could have done better with my chance.

“If we had scored first and gone 1-0 up, I think it would have been a completely different story. But we didn’t take our chances and lost.”
