And Wilder, a lifelong supporter of the League One club, insisted his presence means the days of Bramall Lane being held to ransom by footballing mercenaries are now long gone.

Speaking after being officially unveiled as Nigel Adkins’ successor, the former Northampton Town chief told The Star: “When the opportunity came, I just had to take it. Managing United was always in my ambitions if it became available, but you never know. Neil Warnock would have been the same with his history at the football club.

“There have been some very interesting clubs I have worked for, I haven’t had a silver spoon stuck in my mouth.

“My history gives me an insight and a feeling what the club - and most importantly the supporters - are after.

“I have been there, on both sides of the fence, playing and as a fan.

“But regarding my appointment I believe it’s because I am a good manager and I am ready for the job, it’s my time.”

Wilder, who made his professional debut for United, was handed the reins after guiding Northampton Town to promotion from League Two last term. The 48-year-old named striker Billy Sharp as his new club captain during yesterday’s media conference.

“The recruitment here is going to be massive, getting value for money,” Wilder said.

“A lot has been talked about the budget, maybe the overspend - and I should imagine we will have a decent budget - but one of the attractions to the co-owners is my past record.

“I have worked within budget and get a pint out of a half-pint pot.

“There’s no reason why we should pay over the odds for players here. We won’t be doing that, those days are gone.

“I’m not saying we won’t pay their worth or the going rate but they have to be worth it. They have to be value for money.

“The supporters can relate to that. I don’t think they mind Billy (Sharp) getting paid what he gets paid, he earns every penny of it. Players have to produce.”

“We have spent a long time looking at the squad,” Wilder, who will be assisted by Alan Knill, added.

“I don’t think there will be any major surprises. If they are part of our plans, then they got to get themselves ready for a tough pre-season.”
