United, eight points behind sixth placed Millwall, were beaten 4-0 by Justin Edinburgh’s side on the opening day of the League One season.

And Basham, admitting he still bears the scars of that defeat, said: “It’s professional pride. Nobody wants to get done like that. So we want to spoil their party now and give them something to think about.

“We want to win the game, keep on winning and then see where that takes us in a couple of weeks. We all know what happened down there and so we’ve got a point to prove.”

Gillingham travel north in fourth with Edinburgh, the former Tottenham Hotspur defender, refusing to rule his team out of the automatic promotion race. Although United face an uphill struggle to reach the play-offs, Basham believes that Nigel Adkins’ decision to change their system has made them a much tougher proposition in recent weeks.

Praising fellow midfielder Dean Hammond’s contribution of late, Basham said: “We’ve worked on this shape for a couple of months now and it’s really coming together. It’s brave but we fancy ourselves one on one. Dean is vital in this system because he knows how to look about, how to foul if needs be and how to organise.”

“It’s a brave system, if you like, because you often find yourself one on one but we always fancy ourselves in those situations. We wanted to create chances and it enables us to do that. That’s why the lads are enjoying playing it so much.”
