Sheffield United: Transfer confusion is cleared-up

Despite reports teams would be able to recruit new players from Thursday, the governing body released a statement this afternoon explaining domestic moves can now be processed.

The misunderstanding has been caused by a decision to bring forward the deadline for new signings in order to prevent squads being disrupted once the season is underway.

FIFA rules state windows must be open for 12 weeks, meaning the overall time-frame has now changed. However, managers including Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder will not be able to complete international deals until June 9.

“The closing dates of the transfer window have changed as a result of the agreement made by EFL clubs in February 2018 to close the window for permanent transfers on Thursday 9 August 2018 at 5pm, which is aligned with the decision the Premier League opted to take in September 2017,” an EFL spokesperson said.

Wilder began the process of reshaping his squad earlier this month when Clayton Donaldson and Chris Hussey were both allowed to leave Bramall Lane. Seven players, including George Long, Samir Carruthers and James Hanson, were also “made available for transfer or loan.” James Wilson and Jamal Blackman returned to Manchester United and Chelsea respectively when their temporary agreements with United expired. But the latter could be offered the chance to rejoin Wilder’s side after impressing last season.
