McEveley, who revealed Nigel Adkins’ squad is “loving” the 3-5-2 system employed by coaching staff in recent weeks, made the admission after last weekend’s draw with Gillingham effectively ended United’s League One play-off hopes.

Acknowleding that United have actively been searching for ways to harness the power of the division’s biggest crowd, the defender said: “We have been wanting to find a system, where we can connect with the fans. It seems to be working, they seem to be enjoying their football.

“The attacking threat, we have got bodies and runners all over the pitch, is good. The fans can see that and it bodes well for the future.”

United, 10th in the table ahead of Saturday’s visit to Chesterfield, have faced strident criticism after failing to mount a serious challenge for promotion but were applauded off the pitch following their impressive but ultimately fruitless performance against Justin Edinburgh’s side.

“It (3-5-2) gives us a good defensive resolve, but a great attacking threat as well,” McEveley, the United captain, said. “It’s really enjoyable to play in. The lads are loving it. We are not conceding stupid goals, as we were earlier in the season, we look defensively solid.”
