Sheffield United: '˜Doing this can help us reach the Championship play-offs' defender insists ahead of crucial showdown with Millwall
Chris Basham believes Sheffield United's experiences last season, when they collected 100 points en route to the League One title, could prove crucial as the battle for the Championship play-offs reaches its climax.
With four matches of the season remaining, Chris Wilder’s side enters tomorrow’s home game against Millwall only three points behind the visitors who are sixth in the table.
Basham, revealing how Wilder demanded more from his squad even after promotion from the third tier was secured, said: “The gaffer here never lets his foot slip off the pedal. He showed that with what happened (last year). Even when we went up, he was telling us about the importance of getting to 100 points. We did and the club brought a book out about it called ‘Centurions’. Being a part of that, being able to look at that, makes you feel proud and that’s why we always fight right until the bitter end. We’re all in it together, we’re an honest bunch and we’re all trying to get to the Premier League.”
Like United, Millwall were tipped to struggle at Championship level after gaining promotion via the play-offs last term. The arrive at Bramall Lane unbeaten in league competition since January 1.
Speaking earlier this week, Wilder revealed his respect for both the London club’s squad and its manager Neil Harris.
Basham, echoing those sentiments, said: “I’m not surprised to see them where they are. Both managers probably work from a similar budget and have got similar players; lads who are good on the big occasion, lads who can score goals and lads who want to play for themselves and those around them.”
“Here, the lads have lifted themselves for the occasion,” he added. “Somebody can become a hero here, over the next four games, and that’s the great thing. We are loving it.”
