Nigel Adkins has warned that pressing the panic button could spell the end of Sheffield United's play-off hopes.

But, speaking ahead of Saturday’s South Yorkshire derby at Doncaster Rovers, he insisted Bramall Lane’s first team squad boasts the knowledge and strength of character required to ensure the club’s dream of winning promotion this season does not become a nightmare.

“We’ve got players who have experience,” Adkins said. “So many times, things have gone against us but they’ve always picked themselves up and gone again. That attitude can take us a long way. I’m convinced of that.

“Where we are doesn’t faze us because we’ve been in these situations before. Yes, we’d rather be higher but we know all about course and distance. You’ve got to keep a steady and a calm head.”

United travel to the Keepmoat Stadium under intense pressure after falling to 11th in the table following last weekend’s defeat by Wigan Athletic.

Despite Adkins’ efforts to put a brave face on the result, he admitted it effectively spelled the end of their top two chances with 17 games left to play. The manner of United’s performance also left much to be desired as Gary Caldwell’s side enjoyed more possession and shots on target.

People will be saying all sorts of things but you’ve got to believe it’s going to happen,” Adkins said. “I understand the frustrations of the supporters because this is a big football club.

But I will shoulder the responsibility of keeping everyone positive and united together. Because, if we are, then we give ourselves an opportunity.”
