Sheffield Steelers run comes to an end at Dundee Stars

He scored with one of his first touches of an Elite League puck on Saturday, in the 6-5 win at Edinburgh Capitals, but gave away a penalty shot for Dundee Stars to score a second goal 24 hours later.

Without suspended Zack Fitzgerald and injured duo Andreas Valdix or Mike Ratchuk, Steelers ran out of steam and could not managed a sixth consecutive victory.

They were shut out by a side who were able to contain the threat of Mathieu Roy and John Armstrong, who had scored five goals in their last three outings.

Sunday night started with Hagos almost repeated his achievement of the night before but was thwarted by American netminder Joe Fallon.

Fallon cooly continued to keep Steelers out, his glove stopping a goalbound effort from Jesse Schultz.

Ben O Connor’s tripping call opened up an opportunity for Stars and import defenceman Kevin Hart put the Scots ahead, at 35;25, with a shot the unsighted Mustukovs could not re-direct.

A swift reply was needed - yet it was Steelers who conceded again.

Hagos hauled down an attacker to give away a penalty shot, duly converted by Brett Switzer at 41;24.

It deflated the visiting side who were short of bodies and short on ideas how to beat Fallon.

Players logging long minutes were looking as though they were on the verge of exhaustion. And when Davey Phillips was penalised for tripping, Dundee cashed in with number three, from Vinny Scarsella, at 50;23.

A rout was now on the cards with Scarsella doubling his tally, less than two minutes later.

* On Saturday, Sheffield were 4-0 up after 19 minutes but had to settle for a 6-5 win at Edinburgh courtesy of penalty shots. Hagos, Levi Nelson, Armstrong and Roy, two, scored for Sheffield but a 0-3 last period saw the game go into overtime and penalty shots... a situation which angered coach Paul Thompson, who said it should have been “game, set and match” in the first period.

Steelers man of the match goalie Mustukovs denied Caps’ penalty shooters, with Armstrong and Jesse Schultz scoring to win the points.

“Jesse and John came up with two great penalty shot goals though and Moose was just Moose again making the big saves at the other end” said the coach.
