“I think this tells you about the level the Elite League is playing at right now. It tells you about how well these guys do to bring it every night and play at the speed and intensity they do. The league should take credit for that – for these guys to then take that into these Championships has been fantastic to see.
“I couldn’t be happier for Jonathan Phillips, what a captain and leader he is” said Thompson.
“Jonno has been part of the GB programme for over a decade and seen it have highs and lows. I know it means a lot to all those involved but for him especially it’s an incredible achievement for him to lead this group.

*The Elite Ice Hockey League has rejected a bid by ‘Racers Leisure Ltd’ to join the League, playing out of Edinburgh and taking the place of the financially-challenged Capitals.
A statement reads: “After careful consideration of the proposal put to the board of directors, it has been decided, following a vote taken, that they will not participate in the league going forward.
“We thank them for their application and wish them well for the future. Regarding the vacant 12th slot, we are continuing to examine all options going forward and will announce an outcome in due course.”
There are rumours that an Elite League place might open in Hull.
