Sheffield Steelers bid farewell to title-winning trio

Head coach Paul Thompson has told both the goalie and forward, aged 37 and 40 respectively, that no fresh contracts will be put their way.

The club has also parted company with Russ Moyer, the polished 33-year-old Canadian defenceman.

“I don’t like to leave players hanging around in the summer and I felt it was right to advise them of my decision” said Thompson.

“We wish the guys all the very best in the future and again thank them for everything they did here for us.”

“I couldn’t thank the guys enough for their time here” added Thompson.

“All of them were excellent for us and they leave here as champions and should be proud of their part in that achievement.

There is no official ruling yet on Cullen Eddy,the American blue-liner who has clocked up back-to-back championships with Sheffield.

In a recent interview with The Star, Eddy acknowledged how happy he had been to be part of a team which had accomplished its main goal, of winning the Elite League title

The 27-year-old former AHL man said there had been a “big step” in his second year at the club in terms of fan numbers and support.

“I think it (the club) is going in the right direction” he said, adding that it had been “exciting” to play in front of up to 8,000 fans.

Asked about his future playing career, he replied: “I don’t know, it is not up to me, we’ll see.

“I’ll have to see what my wife and I decide to do in the future.”

He said he did not know whether he would be hanging up the skates.

But he had made “great connections” with players like retiring Jeff Legue and Jason Hewitt.
