Runners carrying the Bassetlaw Games torch arrived in the area to spread Olympic fever all around.

The Bassetlaw torch burned during a school assembly at Misterton Primary School where pupils had prepared for its arrival by creating their own torch designs.

In the afternoon children marched 2012 metres around the playing field in an Olympic Flame Walk.

The Bassetlaw Games torch began its journey in Worksop in February and is travelling around Bassetlaw before returning to the Town Hall in June.

Volunteers are running with the torch in the Schools Torch Relay, visiting every school across the Bassetlaw district on a 90 mile route.

On Tuesday the relay made it to Beckingham Primary School where pupils were waiting excitedly for its arrival.

“We were all watching for the runners coming up the road but they surprised us by running across the playing fields instead,” said headteacher Mrs Liz Moore. “The children were ever so excited to see the torch and it was a lovely introduction to the upcoming Olympics.”

Mrs Moore said pupils and staff were looking forward to some Olympics inspired sporting activities later in the summer. The Bassetlaw torch stayed in school all day until its next journey to Gringley-on-the-Hill on Wednesday.
