Schools needed for record breaking attempt

Interested teachers, parents and children need to register for SignHealth’s sign2sing world record breaking attempt by Friday 20th January.

The event is designed to raise awareness of deafness and the work of SignHealth, as well as acting as a fundraiser for the charity.

Chief Executive of SignHealth Steve Powell encouraged schools to sign up as soon as possible, so there is enough time to learn and rehearse the song before Wednesday 8th February.

“More than 800 schools have so far signed up for sign2sing, but we are hoping around 1,000 schools will participate to ensure we break our current world record,” he said.

“Earlier this year 94,489 children took part in our first sign2sing event and smashed the previous Guinness World Records™, which was 13,418.”

Children’s author Julia Donaldson is in support of the cause.

She said: “I love both singing and sign language, which is such an expressive form of communication not just for deaf but for hearing children.”

“It’s a brilliant idea to bring the two things together as a way of raising awareness and money for SignHealth, and I’m hugely looking forward to signing and singing along with the other 150,000 children – or children at heart – from all over the country.”

Young people from all over the UK and overseas will learn to sign a song, entitled Sign2sing, which has been composed especially for the event.
