Scampton: Youth worker is honoured at awards ceremony for her dedication to programme

An RAF Scampton youth worker has been presented with an award for her dedication at the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund’s Awards.

Lisa Bailey is the 4Children Airplay Youth Worker at RAF Scampton and last year delivered an incredible programme of activities for children living on and near the Station, including a visit to World War One battlefields in France, holding a World War Two-era tea dance at RAF Kirton in Lindsey, and a trip to the poppy installation at the Tower of London.

Lisa said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to win this award.”

“RAF Scampton and Community Development Officer Gill Angel are incredibly supportive of our Airplay programme and as a team we are able to bring the young people’s ideas to life.”

“The ideas, enthusiasm, and support from everyone engaged in the programme is so empowering and as a youth worker, it’s wonderful to see the Airplay participants learning, gaining confidence, and having a great time too.”

Airplay is a youth support programme for the families of service personnel, run for the Royal Air Force.

Paul Hughesdon, Director of Welfare and Policy, said: “Growing up on an RAF Station is never easy, with the children facing frequent moves and long separations from their serving parent.”

“Lisa has made a huge difference for the children at RAF Scampton.”

Airplay is the first programme of its kind for young people in the Service community and is part of the RAF Benevolent Fund’s 12 year, £24m support programme for children and young people of the RAF family aged between zero and 19 years, operating on all main RAF stations across the UK.

It aims to overcome the challenges that life in the RAF can pose for children and young people, including moving regularly and the need to make new friends each time.

This is a unique programme in the Armed Forces and shows partnership at its best, delivering excellence for the serving RAF Family.

The award was presented to Lisa by Air Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, the Ambassador to the RAF Benevolent Fund.
