Scampton community have joined together for a weekend of events to mark Remembrance Day

As part of the events to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and Remembrance Day a weekend of community events has been planned by the Scampton Church Leadership team.

It will be held at Scampton Church and Commonwealth War Graves in High Street Scampton.

The church will be specially decorated with poppies, both inside and out.

One of the organisers, Joe Bartrop said: “The concept of a remembrance weekend at Scampton Church and Commonwealth War Graves was born in a conversation between Greg Agar, the landlord at the Dambusters, and Charlie Hebborn, headteacher at Scampton school, over a pint of beer in The Dambusters one evening.

“From there Aviation Heritage became involved and agreed to fund the project. They are also in in discussion with the RAF to have a flypast by a Typhoon jet. It grew from there really.”

The weekend of events will start at 10.30am on Friday, November 11, with a commemoration event planned by Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire Museums and Schools project, Pollyplatt Community Primary School, Scampton Church of England Primary School, Scampton Playmates Nursery, Curiosity Creators, The Dambusters Inn and Scampton Church.

There will be arches along the pathway to the church which will be covered in poppies of all sizes made by the children under the supervision of ‘Curiosity Creators’, who bring art and curiosity to new spaces.

At 11am children from the schools involved will place a large poppy on each of the Commonwealth War Graves at Scampton, and Les Rutherford, a Bomber Command veteran will lay a wreath on the German war graves.

Between 2pm and 4.30pm on Saturday, November 12, the church, and remembrance chapel, will be decorated and especially lit for an afternoon of reflection, where visitors are invited to view the historical building, poppy displays, and the commonwealth war graves adorned with poppies.

Then on Sunday, November 13, at 10.15am a special service of remembrance among multitudes of poppies will be held in the church and around the war memorial.
