Mr Wright resigned today (Tuesday, 16th September) after finally bowing to sustained calls for him to quit in the wake of the Rotherham child abuse scandal.
Chief Constable Crompton, said: “The force acknowledges the PCC’s resignation today.”
“This represents an opportunity for the force, and the county, to move forward in light of Professor Jay’s report about child sexual exploitation.”
“The force has referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and is in detailed discussion with the National Crime Agency to oversee an independent inquiry into allegations of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham.”
“Any organisations or individuals found to be at fault will be held to account.”
“South Yorkshire Police is determined to bring offenders of child sexual exploitation to justice and takes seriously allegations of sexual offences regardless of how long ago they took place.”
“We remain committed to addressing and tackling the sexual exploitation of young people in South Yorkshire and to regaining the public’s trust and confidence.”
“We are increasing the amount of Force resources devoted to tackling this issue. This will be a matter I will wish to discuss with the newly elected Police and Crime Commissioner as a priority.”
