A Gainsborough nursery has said it is facing having to close its doors for good due to financial struggles.

A spokesman for Ropery Day Nursery said the decision was taken after a consultation with staff.

They said: “Like many childcare providers, the nursery has sadly struggled to remain financially sustainable due to significantly increasing costs – such as national living wage rises and new pension requirements – at a time of severe government underfunding. We understand the disappointment this will cause and the impact it will have on the families and children who use the nursery, and we have worked hard to exhaust all alternatives before taking this decision.

“In the coming weeks, our priority will remain the children who attend the setting and we will continue to support parents in their search for alternative childcare.”

Ropery Day Nursery is based on North Marsh Road and is a tenant of Gainsborough Nursery School, which is not affected by the closure.

A concerned parent, who did not want to be named, said: “I have watched my children’s development grow significantly since they started in January. They are comfortable with the staff, who always put the children at the centre of everything they do. My children have built strong relationships within the nursery, and have made friends.

“I believe with the right funding the nursery would most definitely be an outstanding childcare setting.

“The children are taught independence and through that their confidence grows.

“As a married working parent I find it hard to place my trust into somebody to look after my children, and with Ropery Day Nursery I have had no worries from day one.”
