The Food Standards Agency (FSA) ratings are determined by food safety officers at Bassetlaw Council.

The inspections look at three areas - how hygienically food is handled, the condition of the structure of the buildings and how the business records what it does to make sure food is safe.

The hygiene standards found are then given a rating. At the bottom of the scale is ‘zero’ – which means urgent improvement is required. At the top of the scale is ‘five’ – which means standards are ‘very good’.

Dozens of businesses achieved a top score of five including: The Farm Shop; The Black Lion; Gateford Hill Care Home; Arrow Farm Shop; Blyth Country House Nursing Home; Creswell C of E Infants School; Early Learners Centre and Agra 3.

A number of businesses were also rated as ‘good’ including; Ashleys; Manton Colliery Athletic Club; The Lime House; Britania Fried Chicken; Dragon Garden; Jenny’s Cafe and Tasty Plaice.

Deputy manager at Gateford Hill Care Home, Diana Cameron, said: “Obviously we are proud of the score. We have scored a ‘five’ before so we are happy that we have managed to maintain that.”

Head of the kitchen at Blyth Country House Nursing Home, Spital Road, Sue Moseley, said: “We have had a top score ever since the inspections started. There is three of us in the kitchen so it makes us very proud.”

Coun Julie Leigh, cabinet member for neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw Council, said: “It’s easy for people in Bassetlaw to check hygiene ratings online and choose a restaurant that takes food hygiene seriously.

“A good food hygiene rating is something to be proud of. It matters to customers so we are encouraging all businesses in Bassetlaw to display their rating and be proud of running a business that aspires to have the highest standards.”

“By looking for the green and black hygiene ratings sticker in the window or checking for a rating online, you can make a better informed choice.”
