Retford: Former Iraq serviceman found in possession of ‘friction baton’ and ‘self defence pen’

Steven Lee, 43, of Top Street, North Wheatley, Retford, pleaded guilty to three offences at Worksop Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 3rd October.

The court heard how on the night of 23rd September, Lee had been out drinking with friends after going fishing earlier in the day.

At around 10.50pm police officers saw the defendant in his vehicle travelling at speed.

They followed him for a short period of time before he eventually came to a stop outside his home address.

Officers spoke to Lee and carried out a breathalyser test of which he failed and was arrested.

Whilst in custody he was found to be in possession of a friction baton and a ‘self defence’ pen.

In mitigation, it was said that Lee still had these items from his time as a serving soldier in Iraq.

Lee said that he used the baton to ‘knock the heads off fishes’ and he has been out fishing that afternoon.

The court also heard that Lee could not explain why he was in possession of the pen.

Defending, Ian Pridham, said: “He had had three pints with friends.”

“He will fully cooperative with the police.”

“He has found domestic uses for the items that he had on him.”

Lee admitted two counts of possessing an offensive weapon and one count of drink driving. The case was adjourned until 23rd October.
