Retford: Brave Daniel Kerley to run Robin Hood half marathon in memory of dad

Daniel Kerley,31, of Retford, sadly lost his father, Peter, on Sunday 27th July with his family by his side.

Peter began to develop a persistent cough, so harsh that the antibiotics he was on, failed to cure the cough.

In June 2013 Daniel’s father started chemotherapy for lung cancer which caused him exhaustion and fatigue for sometimes ten days at a time.

Daniel said: “Even though during his treatment he lost his hair, dad was dad again, he told me to be proud of where I come from and proud of my name.”

He said he decided to do the Robin Hood half marathon because he wanted to have a focus.

On the day, Daniel will be running with his brother Adam, Uncle and cousins.

He said: “We’ll start off as a family and then run our own race.”

Other members of the family will be there on the day to cheer the team on.

Daniel added: “If you can help or support, we could help more people.

“Unfortunately cancer touches a lot of peoples lives.”

Two years ago Daniel’s uncle passed away to lung cancer, so when his father’s cough returned in May this year he and his family were upset to learn that it was aggressive.

Daniel said: “When dad was good you kind of forgot he was ill.”

Daniel describes his father as a fit and healthy man.

The family received support via Macmillan and Daniel recalls the regular contact his parents had with their nurse, who was only a phone call away at times of struggle. “The Macmillan nurse was fantastic and mum and dad would always praise how good she was she always had an answer in support” Daniel said.

The Robin Hood half marathon is on Sunday 28th September.
