Retford boy wins art competition

The Clumber Park Hotel and Spa has announced 10-year-old George Carley from Retford as one of the winners of an art competition they launched back in October.

The Falling Leaves competition saw children from all over the region submitting their artistic interpretations of a leaf in the hope of winning a special prize - their artwork being exhibited at the hotel’s Normanton Inn restaurant.

Split into four different categories and judged by critically acclaimed local artist Neil Rands, aka Rama Ramski from Belton, George fought off some extremely stiff competition to claim victory in the nine to 11 age range with his brightly coloured depiction of an oak leaf in felt tip pen and pencil.

George said he was delighted with his win and said he was looking forward to a complimentary meal for him and his family at the hotel.

“I liked the idea of leaves lying on the ground, one on top of another,” he said.

Hotel sales and marketing manager Edward Mobbs said they had such a huge response to the competition they had to extend the deadline.

“The whole idea behind it was to celebrate the stunningly beautiful scenery we have here in Notts, and as the hotel’s emblem is an Oak leaf and we’re right on the doorstep of Sherwood Forest, the Falling Leaves competition seemed like the perfect way to do it,” he said.
