Residents call for road safety as schoolboy fights for life

A Hucknall schoolboy is still fighting for his life after he was hit by two vehicles before getting trapped under one of them.

As many as twelve people had to lift the Audi to free the 11-year-old boy when the incident took place on Nabbs Lane, at the junction with Godber Road, on Tuesday night.

The Holgate Academy pupil was left “critically injured” when he was struck by an Iveco Daily van and Audi A4 Quattro at around 7pm.

A police spokesman said he was taken straight to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre with “life-threatening” injuries - where he currently remains.

But before the fire service arrived at the scene, paramedics were struggling to treat the boy - leading 12 nearby people to lend a hand.

A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service said:“On arrival, paramedics realised the boy had suffered very serious injuries but they could not treat him as he was trapped under a car.

“They have asked us to pass on their thanks to around 12 onlookers who physically lifted the car off the casualty because their actions saved valuable minutes and allowed crews to provide life-saving clinical care.”

The onlookers lifted the Audi A4 Quattro from its wheel arches and pushed the car backwards from the bonnet.

The van involved in the collision was also parked nearby.

Several Hucknall residents have also been in touch to show their support for the boy and his family, who are currently asking for privacy at this time.

Family friends, Naomi Smith and Amanda Smith, from Hucknall, have set up a campaign to raise cash for the family to help them with their travel costs to the hospital every day.

Mum-of-three Naomi said: “I want to help take some of the burden off the family.

“I know there isn’t much I can do but if we can even help them just a bit it will be worthwhile.”

Holgate Academy, have also sent their regards to the family.

A school spokesman said: “Our thoughts and wishes are with the family at this time.” APPEAL: Boy, 11, suffers ‘life-threatening’ injuries after being knocked down by two cars in Hucknall

There have also been numerous calls to launch a campaign for traffic calming measures in the area.

More than 600 residents have already signed a petition to help make Nabbs Lane a safer place for pedestrians.

Amanda set up one of the written petitions, which also has hundreds of petitions.

She said: “I am sick of children getting hurt and not been able to cross the road safely around here.

“I only want safety - it’s not asking for much.”

The women have also set up a meeting with a councillor to discuss their ideas for the road - it is due to be on November 3.

Hucknall MP Mark Spencer has already been contacted about the campaigns and is keen to help with any issues regarding road safety.

He said: “I am very sympathetic towards the people who are trying to reduce the speed in that part of Hucknall and I am keen to try and help to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Officers are also appealing for anyone with information about the incident on Tuesday night to contact them on 101.
