Recovering addict stole DVDs in Worksop

A recovering drug addict from Worksop stole DVDs shortly after he was fined for other thefts, a court heard.

Michael Scott, 39, of Shrewsbury Road, admitted stealing DVDs worth £46.94 from WH Smith, on Bridge Place in Worksop, on May 15.

David Verity, mitigating, said: “Between 2006 and 2014 there was a gap in his offending. I am hoping that this is a blip on the long road to recovery for Mr Scott.

“He has struggled for a long time, but he is doing his best to tackle his problems.”

The court heard Scott had been doing well with the probation service and was providing negative blood tests.

District Judge Andrew Meachin told Scott: “Every time you commit an offence, because of your record, you put yourself in jeopardy.”

He gave Scott a 12-week community order and placed him on an electronically monitored curfew from 9pm to 7am. He was ordered to pay £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £85.
